Free Shows!
September 24th, 2008

You have the opportunity to see some top local artists this week without any strain on your pocketbook, amazingly enough. I know you all are terrible cheapskates and won’t get out of your TV chair unless an event costs little to nothing, so here you go:
You should already be well aware of the Athletes In Slacks show tonight, because I’m sure you’ve all been keeping up with this blog with fervent passion, so I shouldn’t need to remind you that they are playing with Beatrix*JAR and NyteOwl for FREE at the Kitty Kat Club, even though I seem to have already done so. Fans of blips and assorted electronic weirdness ought to come out to this one; plus, if you’ve never been to the Kitty Kat, it is a truly elegant and awesome place to chill out and listen to tunes. Drinks are kinda pricey, but with no cover, you could afford to get a little tipsy at least.

Big Trouble, a band which consists of members who are in or were once in Heiruspecs, hooked up last March to release on EP with Crescent Moon of Kill The Vultures, aptly titled Crescent Moon is in Big Trouble. Clever. They’ve been playing shows under that name lately, fusing Moon’s precise and on-point flow with their own brand of jazz, rock and funk-influenced live backups. Thursday the 25th finds them playing The Whole in Coffman Memorial Union with Elk River’s very own The New Music Machine, who recently released a new EP entitled Portable City. This show is part of The Whole Music Club’s Free Music Month.

The Whole’s Free Music Month continues the following night as MUte ErA plays with A Whisper in the Noise and The Scarring Party. MUte Era is Sho Nikaido, on guitar and vocals, and his wife Jessica Driscoll, on drums, and together they expel a manic spattering of noisy guitar and vibrant rhythms which are much more vivid than one would expect from a pair of musicians. A Whisper in the Noise is a slow and somber foursome who create sparse, moody atmospheres with piano, violin, bass, drums, background noises, samples, and (new to their repertoire on their latest release, Dry Land) guitar(!). The Scarring Party, out of Milwaukee, are an old-timey sounding band with a new-timey contempt for humanity, who also happen to do a pretty great cover of Leonard Cohen’s “Everybody Knows”. Together, the three bands offer quite a unique and unmissable show, and for free no less. Be sure to catch this one.
