This Week’s Highlights – 9/15
September 15, 2008 09:20pm
If you like your punk rock pure, raucous, drunk, loud, energetic, acerbic and fun to sing along with, The Entry is the place to be on Thursday. Be sure to do stretches and drink plenty of water before attending this monster of a bill, which will probably not drop in energy at any point during the five-band set. Dillinger 4, Scared of Chaka (from Albuquerque), Off With Their Heads, Birthday Suits and The Dynamiters is a truly powerful lineup, and most of these bands won’t be playing a show around town for a while, so catch ‘em while you can. Forget waxing poetic on whether punk lives or not: Go slam some folks and down some dirt-cheap beer while these sweaty folks punch you in the ears, all is well.

Black Bear Combo brings their energetic brand of brass and reed music to the 400 Bar on Friday. The band describes their sound as “a raucous mutt inspired by traditional music from eastern Europe and the Balkans, filtered through [their] own noise/freejazz/rock backgrounds”. Openers Red Phone Dispatch have their own description: “It’s like marching polka and shit.” No matter what you call it, the intimate setting at the 400 should serve as an excellent atmosphere for their bawdy tones and rich textures.
