Feelin’ Nostalgic About 2008

February 7th, 2009
By Sofiya Hupalo

I was riding the 16 back from St. Paul with a friend today, and thought to myself, “Whoa, it’s already February 2009.” Normally I am analytical about this sort of thing, and sometimes even nostalgic about the past year. Perhaps I’ve grown out of this habit, or perhaps I realized missing things I can no longer have is lame. Regardless, there were some great things I enjoyed, and will truly miss:

1. Using concerts as an excuse to protest anything Republican. The end of the Bush dynasty was moments from being over, and we couldn’t wait. In the meantime, this gave way to frequent cheap shows, swearing rappers, and lot of dancing.

2. This New Year’s Eve was the last time those cool glasses with two O’s in the middle could be worn. No matter how hard anybody tries next year, it just won’t work with 2010. Though I never bought the glasses, or even intended to, it was nice to have the option of doing so.

3. Britney’s comeback. Watching her rebirth from a fat addict to a steam room babe made me want to go into Britney relapse and watch all her old videos. I don’t care how musically talented she is, she can move her body better than anyone else.

4. Barack and John dirt. Who voted for the worst things in Congress? The best trashy propaganda commercials came out of the Coleman vs. Franken war, though.

5. Flip phones are officially a thing of the past, and this is sad. I was eligible for an upgrade in November, and after 18 months of having a chocolate, I decided nothing beats the good ol’ flip phone. But everywhere I looked, I saw blackberries and envy’s. If you still have a flip phone, treasure it.
