Ever walk over the Washington Avenue Bridge, see the various slogans of organized clubs and random messages from assorted students and decide that next year, you’ll come and paint something alongside them? That’s exactly how the student group, Chicks with Flicks began.
“My sister [Vice President Ella Schovanec] wanted to start a movie club so that we could paint ‘Frodo Lives’ on the footbridge,” remarked President Anna Schovanec.
After signing up as a student group, they were amazed when they actually began receiving e-mails from people wanting to join their club which is described on the Student Activities Office website as “Dedicated to the recreational enjoyment of movies that feature engaging plots, memorable dialogue, or uncomfortably attractive men.” Once the Schovanec’s realized their club could actually have more members than themselves, they began holding regular meetings to watch films in movie theaters or leisurely at someone’s home. Films are decided upon by a majority vote of members and tend toward a Hollywood Blockbuster fare of all genres.
Don’t worry guys; though the name is Chicks with Flicks, men are invited to attend as well. Though they have considered changing the name to better reflect the current members, Anna states, “Some men also attend under the notion that the club is a good place to meet ‘chicks.’”
The club holds small events, like watching True Romance and eating pizza. But they also have larger events, like holding an Oscar screening with awards for Best Costume and Most Accurate Ballot. The group watch advanced screenings of both The Punisher and Envy, host a promo party for Shrek 2 and view Kill Bill 2 when released in theaters still this year.
