Is this sandwich in front of me
right now
staging a lone attack, or
Is this one hostile confrontation
in this sandwich war of attrition?
If I eat the sandwich, it wins,
but
if I don’t eat the sandwich, is it a draw?
Is there any way for me to win?
If I pulverize the sandwich beyond recognition,
does it win because I have acknowledged its existence, the existence of all sandwiches,
and therefore my own position in this conflict?
When I un-sandwich a sandwich,
am I committing a hate crime against sandwiches?

Or is it just self-defense?
