Obama’s Surge

War, more than almost any other undertaking, has the potential to define a presidency; for better or worse, war presidents are often judged more on victory or defeat on the battlefield than the nitty-gritty of domestic policy. And in each war, administrations are faced with pivotal choices that can change the course of a war, the country and history. President Obama is faced with such a moment now: he must decide whether to grant a request from his hand picked commander in Afghanistan, General Stanley A. McChrystal, for at least 10,000 more combat troops, thus escalating the operation there. And …

The Battle over Bioethics

Ranging from assisted suicide to genetically altered food to psychosurgery, the field of bioethics is diverse and of great importance. Every day people grapple with the moral struggles modern science has presented us with. In America, we value our beliefs like we value our identities.

The country’s new shift in political majority likely means a large-scale upheaval of previously enacted social policy. In the midst of this sweeping transformation sit several very important bioethical hot button issues: abortion, stem cell research, gene therapy, and population control, among others. As such, the doors to the …

Obama’s Green Industry…

To finally spark the creation of a clean energy economy, we will double the production of alternative energy in the next three years. We will modernize more than 75 percent of federal buildings and improve the energy efficiency of two million American homes, saving consumers and taxpayers billions on our energy bills. In the process, we will put Americans to work in new jobs that pay well and can’t be outsourced – jobs building solar panels and wind turbines; constructing fuel-efficient cars and buildings; and developing the new energy technologies that will lead to even more jobs, more savings, and …

Obama and Israel

VOICES_obama_dixonbordiano3Do you remember Bitburg? Well, technically, I don’t either – I wasn’t born yet – but that’s why god gave us that internet. In May 1985, then-president Ronald Reagan accepted an invitation to commemorate the 40th anniversary of V-E Day by visiting a military cemetery near Bitburg, Germany. The problem was that there happened to be a bunch of SS soldiers interred there, Nazi war decorations and all. Although the decorations were removed for the visit, and Reagan took the opportunity to spew some generic “never again” rhetoric, critics still …

Probable Obama Secretary Appointments Send the Wrong Message

Obama’s cabinet appointments are going to be very important. After running on a platform of change of leadership, integrity, and political reconciliation between warring factions, Obama needs to be very careful that his cabinet picks represent these values. This is why Obama’s first round of probable picks worries me: two of three are firm, long-time Obama backers, all three are democrats, all three are long term Washington insiders, and is not quite a lobbyist, but not quite free of the appearance of being one. Not exactly a recipe for change.

What the Socialists are saying

Barack Obama’s victory last week spread lots of optimism throughout the world, including the socialist countries of South and Latin America. Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, a leader widely hated by the U.S. government, released a statement after the victory:

“We are convinced that the time has come to establish new relations between our two countries and in our region, based on the principles of respect for sovereignty, equality and true co-operation. The historic election of an African descendant to the head of the most powerful nation in the world is …

The End of an Election

Hi, it’s your friendly neighborhood web editor. As an avid photographer I had the idea of a photo album, a place for good photography in the midst of great change. Photos that tell everyday stories and sometimes none.

For the first installment here’s a series of photographs from the last week in the election. An encounter with Al Franken and Bill Clinton’s rally for Obama and the aforementioned candidate along with some from the Nader rally. If you have photos that you would like to be included now or in the future email me at stuska@wakemag.org. If you want to …

Democratic Unity: Replacing Petty Dissent

The day’s finally come. Hillary’s out. Obama’s in. And he’s made Black History before Hillary could make Feminine History (actually Hillary’s made plenty of Feminine History with her campaign – but, truth be told, both have also made straight-up general history). The Democrats are officially unified, even if I’m reading New York Times stories that say some former Clinton supporters are now donating money to the McCain campaign. While pundits may argue that the Obama vs. Hillary fiasco officially came to a close Tuesday when the Illinois Senator finally got the magic number of …

The Wright Stuff

The Good Ol’ Rev. Jeremiah Wright

It’s easy for any white person to call Jeremiah Wright’s recent actions egotistical. For whites, Wright is an easy Black target, as media coverage has proved this past week. Wednesday’s New York Times editorial claimed Wright’s recent statements were full of “racism” and “paranoia.” Both it and a Star Tribune editorial praised Sen. Obama’s moves to distance himself from his former pastor as much as he could. Steve Perry at Minnesota Monitor called Wright’s media tour …

Hillary, I Just Can’t Take it Anymore

Talking Points Memo just posted a new Hillary Clinton campaign ad, featuring flashes of Osama Bin Laden that are so brief it seems as if they are meant to be picked up by the viewer subconsciously. Is she attempting to dramatize the remaining bitter shreds of U.S. democracy? You be the judge.

But what really puts the aches in my back is how Hillary recently denounced the “activist base” of the Democratic Party at a closed-door (meaning uber-wealthy guests only) fundraiser right after Super Tuesday. …

Substance is Nothing, Image is Everything

The biggest key to winning an election is projecting a public image. It surpasses where candidates stand on the issues, how they work with others, what their personalities are like, and just about every other necessary factor needed to run a successful campaign. Remember when then-Minnesota Attorney General and 2006 DFL gubernatorial candidate Mike Hatch called a reporter a “Republican whore” one week before the election? Hatch’s loss to Gov. Pawlenty shouldn’t have been that much of a surprise to in retrospect. The sad thing is, Hatch made best election performance by a DFL …

The Chickens Are Still Coming Home to Roost

A few weeks ago I wrote a post about Barack Obama’s former pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, and how his name and reputation in the Black Community was being undermined and exploited by a media circus centered on a few YouTube clips of him criticizing the U.S. government. Now that the circus is over and labeled as old news, it might be an opportune time to present Rev. Wright in his own words, words that were certainly suppressed in the coverage of his past sermons. What follows is a letter to the editor intended for, …
